Essential oil is “a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.” – Oxford English Dictionary
In short, they are nothing but extracts from plants – from the flowers, roots, stems, seeds and other parts of the pants. Essential oils have long been used in food sciences, healthcare & beauty products. They are powerfully fragrant. The scent of a rose is the aromatic qualities of essential oils. An oil is “essential” because it contains the essence of the plant’s fragrance (essential does not mean indispensable here). Each of these oils have specific healing qualities and are used individually or as a combination. .
Aroma therapy is the usage of essential oils for improving psychological and physical well-being. It is seldom used in isolation and is usually used in combination with standard treatments. I remember my mom dealing in aroma therapy at least 15 years ago and it has been popular since even before.
I was exposed to the benefits of essential oils during my pregnancy. Our Yoga instructor would rub relaxing essential oils on our wrists before our practice and it lasted well into our hour of prenatal yoga.
Recently when I was researching the possibility of using essential oils for the baby, I came across a fantastic local company – Oilogic. The moms behind Oilogic are Jordan Marrow & Worth Anne Herrell, based very very close to our home in Texas.
Oilogic makes 100% pure essential oil products specifically for kids & babies. Their products are sourced from 13 countries where these plants are indigenous. They are 100% baby-friendly (their Essential Oil Roll-ons and Ouchies & Boo Boo Ointment are MADE SAFE™ Certified)

As simple and brilliant as that!
It so happened that when I received the shipment, both baby V and I were suffering from severe stuffy & runny noses and nothing seemed to help. Then came the Oilogic Stuffy nose & cough roll-on with ( eucalyptus and orange oils amongst others)to the rescue and we both were actually relieved in just a couple of days.
The sleep roll-on has a very soothing fragrance – with extracts of. The Slumber & sleep calming cream is an amazing product to incorporate into your bed time routine. These constitute a beautiful concoction or grapefruit, lavender, chamomile and orange oils.
I highly recommend the tummy & ear troubles roll-on as well. This oil can be rolled behind the ears in case of ear infection or pain. It can also be used for tummy troubles – make sure to rub on generous amounts on the tummy followed by a gentle massage of your choice. Read my post on baby massage here.
At times when nothing else seems to soothe your baby, just roll on the soothing baby essential oil and hold your baby close. Sing to them and look into their eyes and just say everything will be all right. Keep this handy at all times to use even on the go.
I used the products on myself before using on the baby and I can totally vouch for them. Along with helping the baby, I feel these oils also help calm the parents down – we sure need this as much as the bub.
Each of the products are economically priced and easily available at many retailers and you can also pick it up on Amazon.
I also like to use simple plain eucalyptus oil in the humidifier which is a god-sent product that every home must have. A cool mist humidifier adds moisture to the air which prevents dryness to skin & the body in general.
Hope this post helps you and your babies. Do share your thoughts and feedback.
Much love,
Mama Dee
Note: Most of the essential oils can be used for babies above 6 months of age. However, please be cautious when using this for your babies & kids. Ensure you follow instructions and do consult your doctor before using any new products if you have any doubts.
Disclaimer: I was sent the mentioned products by Oilogic. However the views are all my own and based on my own experience with the products.

Eucalyptus isn’t recommended for children under the age of ten. I suggest reading the Essential Oil Safety book by Robert Tisserand.
Thanks for pointing that out Stacey. Eucalyptus oil has been used very widely in the Indian subcontinent since centuries.
